How to rank your restaurant higher on Google Maps

QUICK ANSWER

To rank higher on Google Maps, improve the two factors you control: relevance and prominence. Use the most specific category, complete every profile field, match your menu to what people search, reply to every review, earn a steady flow of new reviews, and post weekly. Distance is the third factor, and you can't change it.

Why does another restaurant show up first?

Usually because its profile matches the search better or looks more established. A competitor with the exact category, more recent reviews and weekly posts can outrank you even with a lower rating. Results also change with the searcher's location, so you may rank first on one block and fifth a mile away.

8 changes that help

  1. Use the most specific primary category. "Taco restaurant" beats "Restaurant" for taco searches.
  2. Complete every field: hours, phone, website, menu link, attributes, description.
  3. Match your menu to search terms. If people search "birria" and your menu says "house special", Google can't connect them.
  4. Reply to every review, good and bad.
  5. Ask every guest for a review, not only happy ones, and never offer a reward.
  6. Post weekly about real dishes, with real photos.
  7. Keep details identical everywhere: Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and your website.
  8. Fix suggested edits fast, so wrong hours don't cost you guests.

What doesn't help

  • Keywords stuffed into your business name. It risks suspension.
  • Buying reviews or offering discounts for reviews. It breaks Google's policy and can remove reviews or the profile.
  • Paying anyone who promises a guaranteed #1 spot. Google says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking.

How to measure progress

Track the searches that matter to you, not just your name. Watch views, calls, direction requests and website clicks in your profile performance data, and compare your position for searches like "tacos near me" from a few nearby addresses. Forkrado's Monday report does this against similar restaurants within 5 miles.

Questions owners ask

Does my star rating decide my ranking?

It is part of prominence, but not the only part. Review count, recency, replies and relevance all matter.

Do Google posts help ranking?

Posts keep your profile current and relevant to the dishes you post about. They support ranking along with reviews and complete details.

Why do I rank in one spot but not another?

Distance changes with every searcher. Map results are personal to where the search happens.

Can an agency guarantee first place?

No honest one can. Google controls the results and does not sell local ranking.
